How to enrol

To enrol for any English or maths course you will need to attend a pre-course assessment. During the interview you can tell us more about your long-term goals. We will assess your skill level and our English and maths specialists can recommend an appropriate course at a centre near you.

GCSE (9–1) courses

The next available start date for English and maths GCSE courses is September 2018.  

English and maths GCSE (9–1) are the new national qualifications that can help you increase work opportunities, further study or personal development. 

If you are applying for a GCSE course and would like to find out more, you should read the brief course description below and have a go at the taster suggestion activities. 

Before enrolment, we require you to complete a task in preparation for your pre-course assessment. This will help us determine if you are ready to study at this level. We will not be able to offer a GCSE (9–1) course if you have not completed the task assessment for each subject below.

English language

This course will help you to develop your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills to communicate with others confidently and effectively.

You will study a range of fiction and non-fiction texts from the 19th and 20th centuries.

Exam dates

  • Paper 1: Fiction and imaginative writing, 5 June 2018
  • Paper2:  Non-fiction and transactional writing, 8 June 2018

Taster suggestion:

To help you understand the kind of reading you will be required to do on this course, try reading one of these books:

  • Frankenstein by Mary Shelly
  • The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle
  • Great Expectations by Charles Dickens

Pre-course assessment task

In preparation for your pre-course assessment you are required to complete an English task. This reading, comprehension and imaginative writing task should take no more than 90 minutes to complete. You can collect the Maths task in person when you book your pre-course assessment or we can send it to you by email. Please bring the completed English task to your pre-course assessment appointment.

Maths

This course is suitable for anyone with a good grounding in maths. Topics covered include graphs, geometry, statistics and algebra.

Exam dates

  • Paper 1:  Non-calculator, 24 May 2018
  • Paper 2:  Calculator, 7 June 2018
  • Paper 3:  Calculator, 12 June 2018

Taster suggestion

To help you understand the kind of coursework expected of you, complete an online maths lesson. It includes videos and interactive activities as well as example exam questions. Don’t try to do everything at once, instead set aside a few sessions of 30 minutes to explore the content. Your local library will have a range of GCSE maths books and free internet access. 

Pre-course assessment task

In preparation for your pre-course assessment you are required to complete sample GCSE maths exam questions. You can collect the English task in person when you book your pre-course assessment or we can send it to you by email. Please bring the completed maths task to your pre-course assessment appointment.
