What is a Neighbourhood Watch scheme

Neighbourhood Watch schemes are local networks of people who are encouraged to look out for suspicious things happening in the community and for each other’s properties – especially when they’re empty.

If someone sees something suspicious they can alert other people in the neighbourhood and if necessary, the police.

This can help you avoid:

• burglaries
• door-to-door scams
• rogue traders.

How to run a watch scheme

There are no specific rules for how to run a Neighbourhood Watch scheme, and they vary between neighbourhoods. Some groups meet regularly and have lots of members, and some are smaller groups that only communicate via email. You can use the scheme in whichever way works for you and your community.
