Machine skills workshop - using an overlocker (TFD241SBR)

This two session course is an ideal complement to existing Clothesmaking courses, and is designed to enable you to get the most out of using an overlocker and achieve a professional finish to your garments. You will learn the correct way to thread up the machine and how to adjust the tension. You will sample various techniques including roll hemming, gathering and mock flat-locking.

What prior knowledge, experience and qualifications will I need?
This course is designed for learners who already have at least a basic understanding of practical garment making. It is not suitable for complete beginners and you should be able to use a sewing machine.
Learning Goals:
To understand the main functions of an overlocker machine To complete a range of samples of techniques to a good standard. To use the overlocker correctly and safely. To identify how to put new techniques into practice for future projects.
What teaching methods will the tutor use?
The tutor will use a range of teaching methods during the course which will include the following: Demonstration - both group and individual, one to one tuition, group work, assessment of progress, observation, discussion / question and answer sessions.
What assessment methods will the tutor use?
The course tutor will use a range of methods to assess your progress on the course. These will include: observation, personal and group feedback, evaluation & discussion of your work.
Will extra work be required outside the class times?
Extra work is not essential but will enable learners to practice techniques and progress their projects at a faster pace.
What materials will I need for the course and how much will they cost?
You will need to bring along your own Basic Sewing Kit to include dressmaking pins, needles, a tape measure and fabric cutting out scissors. Please do not bring your own overlocker machine, as we cannot accommodate them for Health & Safety reasons. You will be using a domestic Bernina overlocker, which functions in a very similar way to other makes of machine.
What do I need to bring to the first class?
Basic Sewing Kit (as above), pen, pencil, notebook and a folder for your samples/handouts would be useful.
Options when finished
The department offers a wide variety of fashion and textile courses at different levels. Information about progression courses is available through the tutor, the Curriculum Leader or the online Adult Learning Lewisham programme. There are also a range of courses at a higher level offered across London and the South East by Colleges, Community and Adult Education providers and through local craftspeople. Additional information
The course fee includes a contribution towards basic course sampling materials & sundries, and maintenance of tools & equipment.
