All ways to pay your council tax

This page lists all the ways you can pay your council tax. Please note: direct debit is the safest and easiest way to pay. 

Our telephone payment system will be unavailable from 7pm on Friday 31 March until 10am on Monday 3 April. We are sorry for any inconvenience. 

Pay by direct debit

If you have a bank or building society account, direct debit is the easiest and safest way to pay.

You can choose to pay on the following dates; 1, 18 or 28 of the month, or each Friday.

You can set up a direct debit online or call 020 8690 9666.

Other ways to pay

If you're not paying by direct debit, all payments are due by the first of the month.

Online

Our secure online form is available 24 hours a day. You will be taken to our secure site, where you will be asked for your card details.

This system validates your account details before your payment is completed, ensuring that your payment is allocated swiftly.

If you provide your email address we will send you an automated receipt or your payment.

By phone

You can pay your council tax by debit or credit card by using our direct telephone line 020 8690 8707.

Post office

  • cash: you will need your bill with a barcode on it.
  • cheque: make cheques payable to Post Office Ltd.

PayPoint

  • Pay in shops or garages where you see the PayPoint sign. You will need your bill with a barcode on it.

Overpayment

If you have overpaid your council tax you can claim a refund.

​Credit card surcharge

If you pay by credit card, you will pay a surcharge of 1.9 per cent of the transaction value. Debit card payments do not incur a surcharge.
