Cost of living crisis
Get support with your living costs
This year's Universal Credit - could you lose out?
The financial year
Every five to six years, the calendar makes it so we have 53 Mondays instead of the usual 52. This coming financial year, 2024 / 2025, is one of those special years.
If you get Universal Credit, the Department for Work and Pensions will only pay for 52 weeks of your rent in a year. In a 53 week financial year, this means there will be one week of rent that will not be covered by Universal Credit.
We will be using the Household Support Fund to try and lessen the impact on Lewisham Council tenants who are affected by this issue and struggling financially due to the cost-of-living crisis. We will be prioritising Lewisham Council tenants already in rent arrears.
If you're impacted by the 53 week issue and you're struggling financially, please contact the Welfare Benefits Team at lh-welfarebenefts@lewisham.gov.uk or call 0800 028 2028 option 2 then option 5. You will need to supply evidence of your current UC claim to be considered.
If you are not a council tenant, we advise you to contact your landlord to discuss any available support.
If you are receiving Housing Benefits, you will not be affected by this issue, as Housing Benefit is paid weekly for each week it is charged.
Housing benefit
If you're on housing benefit, you won't be affected by this issue as it's paid every week that it's charged.
