Restoring the former Catford Constitutional Club

We are working to restore one of the oldest buildings in the town centre, the former Catford Constitutional Club, and bring it back into public use.

Works are underway to refurbish the former Catford Constitutional Club building and reopen it as a pub, with a community kitchen and space for performance, music and arts. The works are expected to be completed in 2024.

The locally listed Victorian building was forced to close in August 2019 due to structural and safety issues. The adjoining Georgian farmhouse, the oldest building in Catford and the only remaining part of the original farm dating back to 1736, will also be brought back into use, having remained derelict for more than 20 years.

The project is being delivered by the Council, supported by £1.65m in funding from the Mayor of London’s Good Growth Fund.

Hayatsu Architects have designed proposals for the refurbished building, as part of a team led by Turner Works, and Claremont Refurbishment have been commissioned to carry out the works.

Thomas Lane Yard

Thomas Lane Yard will be one of the first projects to come forward as part of the Council’s vision for the future of Catford, which has been informed by over 3,000 comments from local residents.

Alongside plans for a new pub in the refurbished Catford Constitutional building, a new pedestrianised space will be created with flexible workspace for local businesses, small shops and food and drink kiosks.

Up to 100 new homes will be built, of which over 50% will be affordable with 40 homes for social rent for those on the Council’s housing register.

A new largely car-free public space will be planted with new trees and greenery with a children’s play area. Supporting the Council’s ambition for Catford to be the greenest town centre in London, this will help encourage local people to walk or cycle local journeys.

The site covers the area currently used as Thomas Lane car park, to the rear of Catford Broadway, and incorporates the Thomas Lane depot, currently occupied under a meanwhile-use arrangement by Supersets.

A planning application for Thomas Lane Yard will be submitted later this year.
