Support for people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness

Find out how we can help you stay in your home or look for a new home if you are homeless, or at risk of becoming homeless.

How we can help

  • We will assess your current homelessness situation and give you advice on the next steps to take.
  • We will assess your current housing situation and work out what your needs are.
  • If you are worried about becoming homeless we will give you advice on the next steps to take.
  • Our housing solutions team will work alongside you to develop a personalised housing and wellbeing plan setting out the next steps that we will both take to prevent or relieve your homelessness.

Financial support

If you are experiencing financial difficulty, depending on your circumstances, we can offer you:

  • advice on budgeting, money management and maximising your income
  • assistance around welfare reform and benefit changes, i.e. universal credit, benefit caps or the local housing allowance
  • employment advice or help finding a job
  • assistance in raising a deposit to secure private rented accommodation.

Our duties towards you if you are homeless or at risk of homelessness

For more information on our duties towards you if you are homeless, or threatened with homelessness, please visit Shelter’s website.

Social housing

If you are eligible, you can apply for social housing.

Emergency housing

Hostels are a good source of accommodation and you can access some of them directly without needing a referral.

  • You can search for accommodation or call Shelter's free housing advice helpline on 0808 800 4444 to find services near you.
  • If you are homeless and have no place to stay but our office is closed, call 020 8314 7007 for advice and assistance.
