To search our records in the Register Office, contact us on 020 8690 2128.

Searching the indexes

For a fee of £18, our staff will give you access to the register indexes for up to six hours (or two people for three hours). We do not give access to the registers themselves.

For early records, the indexes give only the names and approximate date of birth, death or marriage. Some later records give an exact date of the event.  For more detailed information please speak to a member of our staff.

Information from the registers

When you have completed your own search of the register indexes, you can ask us to verify the record. You can then buy a copy of the certificate, if you wish.

Cost of copy certificates: £10 each

Burial and cremation records

You can search burial and cremation records online.

Local history and heritage

Our archives go back hundreds of years and include information about Lewisham's famous residents and its fine architecture.

The local history department can help you research your family tree or find out about the history of your local area.

After the mid-1850s burial within civil burial grounds became more common and burials within parish churchyards rare. The Local History and Archives Centre holds some parish registers for the borough recording baptisms, marriages and burials. It does not hold records for Lewisham’s civil cemeteries and crematoria. For these records, contact Bereavement Services (details below).
