What you can and can't recycle

On this page, you can find out what items can go in your green wheelie bin or box, and what to do with items that can't.

What can be put in your green recycling bin/box?

Please remember where applicable to rinse or wash out any containers before recycling. This will help keep your box free and safe from unwanted pests and vermin.

You can recycle the following items:

  • paper - any type of paper can be recycled  including magazines, newspapers, shiny paper, yellow pages and envelopes
  • cardboard - all types of cardboard, including food packaging
  • glass - all types, such as bottles and jars. If the lid of a jar is metal, we can recycle that too
  • tins and cans - all types of tins and cans including aluminium and steel
  • plastic bottles -  plastic waste does cause some confusion so as a general rule we say 'if it is a bottle shaped plastic we accept it' such as fizzy drinks, milk, detergent and shampoo bottles. The only exception to the rule are thin supermarket carrier bags but not ones from local minimarts or corner shops.
  • kitchen foil -  but must be free of food and clean.

What can't be put in your green recycling bin/box?

  • glass from windows, broken glass, light bulbs, ceramics or ovenware
  • waxed paper cartons such as fruit juice and milk (see the alternative recycling schemes for these items below)
  • Ready-made meal packs and takeaway food packets
  • other plastic packaging including yoghurt pots, multi-layer plastic, plastic bags and food trays
  • batteries, mobile phones and ink cartridges.

Where can I recycle things that can't go in my green bin/box?

You can recycle many items that can't go into your green recycling box at the Landmann Way Re-use and Recycling Centre in New Cross.

You can take paper-based fruit juice cartons, and other similar waxed or coated paper packaging to one of our carton collection points.

You could also donate furniture, electrical items and other household goods to charity. Many local charities will collect items for you. Find out more on the furniture re-use page.

You can recycle your garden waste using our green bag recycling scheme.

There are many other recycling schemes that you can use, such as the Bookhopper scheme for swapping books that you've read. Find out more on the recycling - useful websites page.
