Trial of garden waste collection

A brown binResidents in nine areas across the borough were chosen to test run a new brown bin aimed at increasing composting across Lewisham.

The trial collection service allowed residents to dispose of large amounts of garden waste on a weekly basis.

The trial service ran from July to November 2007.

Items we collected in the brown bins

During the trial period, we collected the following items:

  • flowers and plants
  • grass cuttings
  • leaves, twigs and branches up to 4 inches (10cm) in diameter.

In just thirteen weeks, a total of 183,620 kg of green waste was collected.

What happens now?

There are plans now being carried out to pick up all the brown bins in the borough, due to this being a pilot scheme. A final decision has not yet been reached about the future of the garden waste collection but we will update when a decision has been made. Thank you for you co operation and involvement.
