This course is specifically designed to build a portfolio of technical samples, that will introduce you to a range of skills and finishes. It is an excellent introduction to Tailoring for those learners wishing to move to a beginners/improvers level course and/or apply for an accredited course in Further Education. Techniques covered will include a wide variety of handstitches, seams, zips , sleeves & pockets.

How to enrol
What prior knowledge, experience and qualifications will I need?
This course does not require any prior knowledge in sewing or garment construction- and is aimed specifically at beginners. Maths using addition, subtraction and multiplication are required on this course in order to make calculations for a variety of projects. English reading skills are essential to be able to interpret patterns and follow technical instructions. Learners are, therefore, expected to have at least Entry Level standard in Maths and English. Before enrolling, please contact the curriculum leader if you have any concerns regarding the suitability of the course for you.
Learning Goals:
To learn the basics of tailored garment construction. To identify and sample a range of techniques. To use specialist tools and equipment correctly and safely. To complete a portfolio of samples to a good standard.
What teaching methods will the tutor use?
The tutor will use a range of teaching methods during the course which will include the following: Demonstration - both group and individual, one to one tuition, group work, assessment of progress, observation, discussion / question and answer sessions.
What assessment methods will the tutor use?
The course tutor will use a range of methods to assess progress on the course. These may include: Observation, completion of an Individual Learning Plan which will be updated regularly, evaluation of work samples, question and answer sessions.
Will extra work be required outside the class times?
Extra work is not essential but will be beneficial to enable learners to practice techniques. It is recommended that learners re make their samples again at home between sessions in order to reinforce the construction stages.
What materials will I need for the course and how much will they cost?
An A4 sized folder for storing samples and handouts, plus a notebook are essential. The Tutor will discuss materials and projects during the first session of the course, but you will need to purchase 2 metres of inexpensive plain coloured medium weight wool and several different zip fasteners. You will also need a sewing kit comprising a good pair of scissors, tailors chalk, dressmakers pins, basting thread, polyester sewing thread, hand sewing needles, a seam ripper and a tape measure.
What do I need to bring to the first class?
Please bring your notebook, folder, fabric and basic sewing kit to the first session. If you are unsure of what to buy, please discuss this with the tutor.
Options when finished
The department offers a wide variety of fashion and textile courses at different levels. Information about progression courses is available through the tutor, the Curriculum Leader or the online Adult Learning Lewisham programme. There are also a range of courses at a higher level offered across London and the South East by Colleges, Community and Adult Education providers and through local craftspeople.
