Council tax reduction scheme

The council tax reduction scheme is designed to help people on a low income to pay their council tax.

From 1 April 2017:

  • If you are a pensioner on a low income you may be eligible for a reduction of up to a maximum of 100% on the whole amount of your council tax.
  • If you are of working age on a low income you may be eligible for a reduction of up to a maximum of 67% on the whole amount of your council tax.

Find out more information about the change to the maximum reduction for people of working age from 1 April 2017.

Check your entitlement to housing benefit and council tax reduction.

Once you have checked whether you are entitled to a reduction – and you want to make a claim – you will need to do this by phone. Call 020 8690 8444 from Monday to Thursday 9am–5pm or on Friday from 9am–4pm.

If you are waiting for an assessment you must continue to pay your current bill until your claim has been assessed.

If you are not eligible for the council tax reduction scheme you might still be able to apply for a discount based on your situation.
