Regenerating Crossfield open space

Find out about work to create a new green space in the area known as the Crossfield open space.

We are creating a new public area in the triangle of open space bordered by:

  • Crossfield Street
  • Coffey Street

  • Deptford Church Street.

Masterplan

We're leading the work on developing a landscape masterplan for the area known as the Crossfield open space.

The plan will guide the high-quality restoration and landscaping of the open space and surrounding streets once construction of the Thames Tideway Tunnel at this location finishes.

We've developed the masterplan with the help of:

  • the local community and local stakeholders
  • events and activities to explore perceptions of the space and area and to feed into the development of the design concepts
  • a community stakeholder steering group which met regularly and provided constructive views from the perspective of the local community and surrounding stakeholders
  • designers and engineers at Thames Tideway Tunnel to ensure the limited above ground structures of the Thames Tunnel engineering works aresuccessfully and sensitively integrated into the landscape design for the open space.

You can find the landscape masterplan below.
It forms the basis for us and Thames Tideway to produce more detailed designs for the space and Crossfield and Coffey Street.

When it will happen

Thames Water is expecting to finish the Thames Tunnel works at Deptford Church Street in 2020, but it could take a further two years to complete and commission the whole tunnel system. The new open space will be created once construction of the Thames Tunnel is completed.

Benefits

This is a unique and exciting opportunity to create a high-quality public space and community resource. The space could enhance the historic setting, connect local destinations and provide a fantastic long-term positive asset for Deptford.

St Paul’s Church and St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School

The design of the open space will protect and enhance the appearance, character, setting and use of St Paul’s Church and churchyard which are next to the open space. The 1730 Grade I listed church by the architect Thomas Archer is one London’s finest and one of only two Grade I listed buildings in Lewisham.

We also intend to enhance the setting of St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, providing a better sense of place and connection to the wider surroundings and having close regard to vehicle and pedestrian movements and amenity of the school.
