Anybody who is liable to pay rent can claim, as long as they are:
- over 16 years of age
- responsible for paying rent for where they live
- in receipt of Income Support / Jobseekers Allowance (income-based) / Pension Credit
- living on a low income
- have savings of less than £16,000.

Housing Benefit cannot help with mortgage payments. If you are a home owner, you may be able to get some help with the interest payments on your mortgage. For advice contact the your local Job Centre or Law Centre.
