How does the count work?
The count is managed locally by Returning Officers. The Mayoral elections result is worked out on a first and second preference Supplementary Voting System. This means that you can vote for two candidates – your first and second preference. If there is no overall winner on the first preference votes then the supplementary, or ‘second preference’ votes, are taken in to account. At local elections, the result is worked out by the ‘First Past The Post’ system. That means that the candidate with the most votes is elected.
Your ward and polling station will be shown on the front of the poll card we will send you. Some polling stations have changed. Please check the map on your poll card carefully.
You will be given two ballot papers. Remember – the yellow one is for the Mayor and the white one for your local councillors. On the ballot paper for the Mayor every voter has two votes – vote in the square for your first choice and once in the circle for your second choice.
You do not have to give a second choice. If you wish, you can simply vote once for your first-choice candidate. If you vote twice for the same candidate, you second vote will not be counted.
