Black History Month, October 2017

Celebrate Black History Month in Lewisham with a range of events and activities happening across the borough.

Lewisham is marking Black History Month, a national event which runs every year in October, with a series of events that celebrate the culture, history and achievements of black and ethnic minority communities.

This year’s programme features a line-up of film screenings, family activities, talks and exhibitions.

Events include an interactive and family-friendly talk by author and historian Paul Crooks about his ancestral history, a Wikipedia 'editathon' for people interested in Lewisham’s black history, and a photography exhibition at Lewisham Library, with photographs from the past telling the stories of black people in Britain.

There is also a competition for children to enter and draw, sketch or paint what Black History Month means to them.

Sir Steve Bullock, Mayor of Lewisham, says: ‘As ever we have some great events planned in Lewisham for Black History Month which everyone can get involved in and enjoy. It is always exciting to have the opportunity to celebrate the diversity in the borough and the contribution those communities have made.’
