Lewisham Council - Consultation on waste and recycling changes

Consultation on rubbish and recycling service changes

Our consultation on changes to the way we collect rubbish and recycling from houses and flats in houses in Lewisham took place in 2015.

At a meeting of Lewisham's Mayor and Cabinet in February 2016 the report on the consultation was considered and agreed.

Why we have to change

  • We need to comply with new regulations that were introduced on 1 January 2015. To do this we must show our collection arrangements maximise the amount of paper, metal, plastic and glass that is recycled and improve its quality, taking into account technical, environmental and economic practicalities.
  • By 2020 we have to show that we are contributing to the national target to recycle, reuse or compost 50% of all our waste. If we do not do this then the Council is likely to face significant fines.
