Gritting in icy weather

We provide a winter gritting service from the first weekend in December to early April.

This involves treating roads with salt both when ice or snow is forecast and after it has formed.

Main roads (red routes)

Transport for London (TfL) is responsible for gritting the main trunk roads in the borough – for example, the A2, A21 and the South Circular.

All other main roads

We carry out gritting on footpaths and non-TfL road surfaces. We grit roads in order of priority. Road gritting map.

Main priority routes

  • primary routes bearing the heaviest traffic
  • all bus routes
  • stations
  • hospitals
  • major shopping areas
  • roads with steep gradients.

Secondary priority routes

As soon as the primary routes have been gritted, we focus on routes which include:

  • all schools not included on the primary routes
  • day care centres served by door2door.

Report a road or footpath that needs gritting

If, during cold weather, your road has not been salted it means it has not been identified as a priority route. If you are concerned that a road or footpath is dangerous due to the presence of ice or snow, please tell us.

We will try to grit these additional areas as soon as possible. However, please understand that there may be many areas requiring treatment and we will deal with requests in order of priority.

Salt grit bins

We have been advised against providing salt grit bins. Bins are frequently vandalised and the salt and grit thrown into neighbouring gardens.
