Guide to commenting on planning applications

It is important that the community have the opportunity to comment on a planning application.

By getting your views this allows the Planning Officer to be able to reach a balanced view as to whether the proposal should be granted planning permission.

How do I comment?

There are three ways in which you are able to comment on a planning application.

Comments made including personal details submitted, can be seen by Councillors, the applicant and members of the public, although they are not currently published online.

When such information is sent out electronically, we will endeavour not to include signatures, personal email addresses and telephone numbers. 

We cannot be held responsible for representations from anyone commenting on planning applications, which may contain libellous or defamatory statements.

All comments will need to include:

  • name and address
  • date
  • application no/site address.

If you are submitting a comment in writing then your comment must be legible.

What is considered to be a comment?

All comments will be taken into account, as long as they are planning considerations. These include:

  • noise
  • impact on amenity
  • conservation areas
  • design
  • traffic and parking issues
  • loss of privacy
  • loss of light
  • highway safety
  • wildlife
  • planning site history
  • appearance of the development
  • compatibility with other uses in the area.

What is not considered to be a comment?

  • loss of value to property
  • boundary disputes
  • noise from construction
  • loss of view
  • issues of a moral and religious nature
  • health and safety risks.

There are some planning applications which do not give the opportunity for representations to be received. these include Lawful Development Certificates, Approval of details, Advert Consent and EIA Screening. It is important that you check the individual planning application before you make a comment.

Is there a time period for commenting on applications?

You have 21 days from the date of publicity, which in many cases will be when the consultation letter is sent out to you. We will accept representations up until the application has been decided.

What happens when I comment on a planning application?

All comments are acknowledged by way of email or by letter.

You can check that your comments haves been received us however you will need to allow up to 5 working days. Please contact; planning@lewisham.gov.uk.

We will not contact you again until after a decision has been made to give time for the application will be heard at planning committee and any alterations to be made to the development proposal.

Objections or supporting comments on applications must be rational, impersonal and directed principally to the planning issues raised by the proposal. comments of a personal, slanderous, libellous, defamatory, or otherwise offensive or abusive nature are not constructive or helpful to the process of determining a planning application and may result in action for libel.
