Lewisham Council - Free internet access in libraries

Free internet access in libraries

All the libraries in the borough offer free internet access. You can walk in and book a place at any of our libraries, with sessions typically lasting 15, 30 or 60 minutes.

You can have up to three sessions a day using the computers.

How it works

On your first visit, you need to register at the counter using your library card. After this you can book a session using the self-booking access terminals available in most libraries, or with the library staff. You will have to agree to an on-screen acceptable use policy before beginning your session.

You can also make two bookings a week in advance in all libraries except Lewisham, Catford, Forest Hill and the Library at Deptford Lounge.

Frequently asked questions

We provide access to the internet in keeping with our role as a provider of informational, educational, recreational and cultural enrichment opportunities for our users.

We consider that it is in the interests of library users and the free flow of information that we manage web provision with the minimum of filtering software. However, users should be aware that we monitor internet use and some sites will be blocked.

What internet services are available?

  • We provide access to the world wide web but do not allow access to Usenet newsgroups.
  • Users can set up their own web-based email account but we do not provide server-based email facilities.
  • We provide access to 15 specialist resources including encyclopaedias, family history material and newspapers.

How much does it cost?

  • Use of the internet is free.
  • Users can book on for up to one hour and may have three sessions a day, subject to the availability of the PCs.

Is the internet safe for my child to use?

A parent's guide to the internet and chat rooms is available to answer your concerns by visiting the Childnet International website.

What happens if I arrive late for my session?

There is a grace period of five minutes for each session, but after this the session will be lost and you will need to book again. Please note, if you book a session which you fail to use, it will still count towards your allotted three sessions per day. If you book a session and realise you will be unable to use it, please inform a member of staff in advance so that it can be deleted without costing you a session.
