Lewisham Council - Secondary school improvement programme

Secondary school improvement programme

Secondary schools in Lewisham are currently benefiting from a £1million school improvement programme, funded by the Department for Education (DfE) and Lewisham Learning (a partnership between schools in Lewisham).

What is the aim of the school improvement programme?

The aim of the programme is to:

  • rapidly increase the number of good and outstanding secondary schools in the borough
  • improve the the proportion of good and outstanding teaching
  • improve the attainment of all pupils in each school

As part of the project we are working with the Atlas Teaching School Alliance which provides support and training programmes for teachers and school leaders.

Where did the money come from?

  • £750k was awarded as part of a successful bid to the DfE’s Strategic School Improvement Fund which supports school improvement projects such as this.
  • £250k has been given from Lewisham Learning’s budget as part of the commitment to improve secondary outcomes.

How is the money being spent?

Through our work with Atlas the funding will provide:

  • high quality subject advice and support to classroom teachers
  • an experienced school leader for each secondary school to act as a challenge advisor who will visit the school on a regular basis, to support and challenge the senior leaders.

How long is the project being funded for?

18 months, until April 2019.

Are academies and federations part of the project?

Yes. All 14 Lewisham secondary schools, regardless of their status are involved.

How will my child benefit from this project?

Our aim is that all Lewisham children attend a good or outstanding school and KS4 outcomes improve.

What happens when the money runs out?

We plan to continue to run aspects of the project from the budget of Lewisham Learning after April 2019 and will look for opportunities to bid for extra funding.
