Maths – Making Numbers for You (MATHS01)

This is the course for you if you would like to improve your maths skills in a fun and relaxed class. You will explore the use of numbers in everyday life and work through games and real-life contexts. At the end of the course you will have increased your confidence to understand and communicate using numerical information.

What prior knowledge, experience and qualifications will I need?
Basic reading skills are required.There will be a pre-course assessment.
Learning Goals:
Attend 20 out of 24 sessions on time. Recognise and understand numbers in a range of everyday contexts. Explore and apply different methods for calculations with 2-digit numbers. Agree a personal maths goal.
What teaching methods will the tutor use?
The teacher will help you learn through experience and exploration – using games, videos, worksheets and context-based learning. You will work in small groups and pairs, helping each other to make progress in a relaxed atmosphere.
What assessment methods will the tutor use?
The tutor will assess your skills at the start of the course and assess your progress at the end of the course.
Will extra work be required outside the class times?
Applying what you learn in everyday situations will build your confidence and help you make good progress.
What materials will I need for the course and how much will they cost?
Pens and pencils, wide-lined A4 paper, A4 ring binder, ruler and basic calculator – all widely available at affordable prices.
What do I need to bring to the first class?
Writing materials: pen, pencil, paper ruler and calculator.
Options when finished
The tutor will take account of attendance, punctuality and commitment to study when determining progression routes. You can progress from this class into the follow-on class – Made to Measure. ALL offers internal opportunities to join preparation for employment courses - ask at reception about Job Club.

To enrol on this course, you must first book an appointment for a pre-course assessment. You will have an assessment of your maths skills and an interview with one of our specialist Maths tutors to help identify the most suitable course for you. Please allow up to 2.5 hours for this appointment. Please bring any Maths certificates you have and bring proof of ID with you. We will check your eligibility and answer any further questions you may have. On course you are expected to attend regularly and participate fully.
