Sewing skills for improvers (TFD0374BR)

If you love to sew and feel that you would like to develop your skills further, then this short and informative course is for you! Continue to build your confidence by experimenting with a range of sewing accessories & different machine feet. You will sample and practice a comprehensive range of sewing techniques to build a small practical reference folder - and these will include blind hems, edge & topstitching, buttonholes, fool-proof invisible zip insertion and decorative seam finishes. Whether it be for clothesmaking, tailoring, crafts, or home furnishings- mastering these techniques will enable you to achieve a more professional finish to your work.

What prior knowledge, experience and qualifications will I need?
This course is not suitable for complete beginners, or those learners with very limited sewing knowledge- you must be able to use a sewing machine confidently and have good general clothes making skills.
Learning Goals:
To develop your knowledge of a range of sewing techniques. To experiment with different machine feet & accessories. To complete a range of technical samples to a professional standard. To be able to apply techniques to your own home or course projects.
What teaching methods will the tutor use?
The tutor will use a range of teaching methods during the course which will include the following: Demonstration - both group and individual, one to one tuition, group work, assessment of progress, observation, discussion / question and answer sessions.
What assessment methods will the tutor use?
The course tutor will use a range of methods to assess progress on the course. These may include: Observation, completion of an Individual Learning Plan which will be updated regularly, evaluation of work samples, question and answer sessions.
Will extra work be required outside the class times?
Extra work is not essential but will enable learners to practice and reinforce the techniques learned on the course.
What materials will I need for the course and how much will they cost?
You will need to bring your own basic sewing kit to the sessions- including dressmaking pins, needles, tape measure, fabric cutting out scissors, threads. Basic sampling materials will be provided & you may also need to purchase some additional small items -your tutor will advise you on this.
What do I need to bring to the first class?
Basic Sewing Kit (as above), pen, pencil, notebook and an A4 folder would be useful for storing samples & handouts. A phone/camera would also be useful for recording ideas and techniques.
Options when finished
The department offers a wide variety of fashion and textile courses at different levels. Information about progression courses is available through the tutor, the Curriculum Leader or the online CEL programme. There are also a range of courses at a higher level offered across London and the South East by Colleges, Community and Adult Education providers and through local craftspeople. For more information about higher level courses currently available, please speak to your tutor or the Curriculum Leader.
Additional information
Please note that it is not possible to bring your own sewing machine to the course- these are provided at the centre- and that you will not make a finished garment or craft item on this course. The course fee includes a contribution towards basic course sampling materials & sundries, and maintenance of tools & equipment.
