Planning policy

Planning policy

Planning policy aims to ensure that development and changes in land use occur in suitable locations, are sustainable and provide protection from inappropriate development in the long term public interest.

In this section

Section 38(6) of the Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act 2004 requires planning decisions to be made in accordance with the development plan unless material considerations indicate otherwise. The development plan in the borough is the:

  • London Plan
  • Lewisham Core Strategy
  • Site Allocations Local Plan
  • Lewisham Town Centre Local Plan
  • Development Management Local Plan.

The Lewisham Unitary Development Plan (UDP) 2004 has now been superseded.

What's new

Our response to the draft new London Plan

The London Plan (2016) is the spatial development strategy for London. Along with our Local Plan, it forms part of our development plan, which will deliver the vision and a framework for the future development of the borough.

The Mayor of London has prepared a draft new London Plan (2017) and carried out a consultation about it. We have submitted a response that sets out our broad support for the new plan and the draft policies it contains. We also highlight some specific areas of concern. We submitted the response letter to the Greater London Authority on 1 March 2018. You can read the letter below.

Changes to the setting of technical standards for new housing

Changes have been made to national planning policy, including technical standards being set for energy, water efficiency, internal space and accessibility. The document below explains how national and regional policy in this area are translated and applied within the context of the London Borough of Lewisham.

Applications to establish neighbourhood planning forums

In 2016, Sir Steve Bullock, Mayor of Lewisham, approved the establishment of neighbourhood forums for Lee and Deptford Neighbourhood Action. This means that there are now five approved forums in Lewisham: Crofton Park, Honor Oak Park and Grove Park, which were approved in 2014, and the Corbett Estate, which was approved in 2015.
