Increasing participation in local democracy

Find out how we’re improving local democracy following the Lewisham Democracy Review.

In July 2018, we set up a Local Democracy Review as part of our corporate strategy, to make the Council even more democratic, open and transparent.

We consulted residents, businesses and other members of the community and produced a final report that listed 57 recommendations for change. The recommendations include:

  • developing an open data approach to improve transparency
  • exploring the possibility of a people’s panel to improve public influence in decision making
  • a more flexible system of scrutiny and policy development to improve effective decision-making.

You can read the full list of recommendations in the report.
