Voter registration for the armed forces, crown servants and overseas electors

If you are overseas in the armed forces, work for the Government or are a British citizen living outside the UK, you may still be able to vote.

Armed forces

If you are overseas in the armed forces, you can vote in:

  • general elections
  • local elections
  • European elections in the UK.

An application lasts for five years. We will write to you three months before your registration is going to expire so you can renew your application.

Crown servants

If you work for the Government, you can vote in:

  • general elections
  • local elections
  • European elections in the UK.

An application lasts for one year. We will write to you three months before your registration is going to expire.

Overseas electors

If you are a British citizen who has lived outside the UK for more than six months, you may be able to register as an overseas elector. This means you can vote in:

  • general elections
  • European elections in the UK.

To register as an overseas elector, you must be a British citizen and meet one of two sets of conditions:

  • your name used to be on the electoral register for an address in the UK
  • there are less than 15 years between the qualification date of that register and the date you are applying to register as an overseas elector.

Or

  • you have reached the age of 18 while living abroad
  • you were too young to be on the electoral roll before you left the UK
  • a parent or guardian was on the electoral register for the address you were living at on that date.

An application lasts one year. We will write to you three months before your registration is going to expire.

How to reister

You can register to vote online or by post. To register by post, complete an application form and post it to us.
