Updating the electoral register (the annual canvass)

Every year we update the electoral register to confirm who is eligible to vote. This is called the annual canvass.

This means that every household has to update or confirm the names of anyone aged 16 or over who live at a property.

Who can be on the electoral register

If you’re aged 16 or over you can be on the electoral register. However you can only vote when you become 18.

Responding to the annual canvass

You can update or confirm your details online or by returning the paper form that is sent to you.

We will send reminder forms, or a canvasser to your property, until we receive your updated or confirmed details. You can save us time and money by responding quickly.

Timetable

  • 1–5 August 2017: first form sent out to everyone on the register
  • 3–4 August 2017: email reminder sent to residents who we hold an email address for
  • 22 August 2017: a reminder form will be posted out to those who have not responded
  • 25 September 2017 onwards: canvassers will visit the homes of people who have not responded to the reminder form.

Responding online, if you received an email from us

This year we emailed all residents on the electoral register, who we have an email address for.

If you received this email you were asked to update or confirm your household details online. This email was sent between 3–4 August 2017 and the sender was Lewisham Council (alerts@lewisham-mail.co.uk).

To update or confirm your details online you will need to enter your two-part security code, that was sent in the email, and your postcode.

You do not need to return your paper form if you have updated or confirmed your details online.

The new electoral register

The new electoral register will be published on 1 December 2017.
