Transport for pupils and students

Public transport for pupils aged up to 16 years old

Children up to 18 can travel free of charge on London buses and trams with an Oyster photocard. Children under 11 can also travel free on London Underground, Overground and DLR services.

Your child will qualify for free travel support if their nearest available school is more than:

  • two miles away for pupils ages under 8
  • three miles away for those aged 8 and over.

Low income families

A low income family is one that has children who are entitled to free school meals or who receive the maximum Working Tax Credit.

Primary school children from a low income family will qualify if the nearest school is over two miles away.

Secondary school children from a low income family will qualify if they go to:

  • a suitable school between two and six miles away as long as there are not three or more suitable schools nearer to their home address
  • the nearest school chosen on the grounds of religion or belief and the school is between two and 15 miles from their home address.

Lewisham Council will not issue a travelcard if the school is less than five miles away from your home address.
