The Mayor and the Assembly's purpose is to promote economic and social development and improve the environment in Greater London.

The Mayor is charged with devising strategies and action plans to tackle London wide issues. The London Assembly provides a check and balance on the Mayor, scrutinises his performance and investigates issues of London wide significance. They are elected at the same time for four years terms.
