Street furniture can range between public seats and fire gates to non-illuminated and illuminated road signs and bollards. The Council’s highway maintenance group are responsible for the maintenance of street furniture on all of Lewisham’s roads, with the exception of the red routes. Transport for London maintains the street furniture on the red routes.
FAQ
How do I report a damaged railing/bollard or other street furniture?
You can report any damaged street furniture (including benches, bins street lights guard railing, bollards etc) to us direct to CallPoint on 020 8314 7171 or use the online Street Fault Report Form on this site.
The fire gate in my road is continually being broken open. What can the Council do to secure it?
There are several fire gates in the borough which are repeatedly broken open. Our highway inspectors regularly fit new padlocks to the gates and all fire gates are monitored during routine inspection rounds.
The padlocks we use are of a standard type to ensure that all fire appliances carry the appropriate keys. Unfortunately circulation of these keys cannot be controlled, and they are used regularly by people who wrongly consider that they should be able to pass through the closures (they are aware that their actions are illegal, so they don't stay around to lock the gates behind them!).
We have been trialling some new posts that drop into a socket in the ground. Although they use the standard locks, they also require a special key, carried on all fire engines, to release them. Lewisham fire station has approved their use, on a trial basis, at Leahurst Road.
The trial was initially very successful but the posts were recently pulled out of the ground by someone otherwise unable to get past them. We are now discussing with the manufacturers a method of making the fixings stronger. When we have devised a 'foolproof' fixing we will deploy them on a wider basis.
Meanwhile if you notice a fire gate open please let us know on 020 8314 7171.
