Yellow lines are provided where there is a need to restrict parking to help alleviate traffic flow and to prevent obstructions on the highway. They are enforced by the Council’s parking service, through our enforcement contractor, NCP.
All yellow lines are supported by a traffic regulation order, a legal document which makes the lines enforceable. Some special lines are allowed with prior approval of the Department for Transport or if they are experimental and under trial.
Double lines mark lengths of road where there is no waiting at any time. Single lines usually indicate a shorter period of restriction such as daytime. Outside of controlled parking zones, supplementary plates will show the actual times. If there are no supplementary plates then the hours of restriction will be the hours of operation shown on the sign at the entry point to the zone.
Loading restrictions are shown by yellow markings on the kerb (kerb blips) and on the supplementary plates.
The Highway Code gives examples of the lines in normal use.
FAQs
Can the Council put in yellow lines to stop drivers parking too close to junctions?
The Council will put in single or double yellow lies where this is appropriate to prevent drivers from parking unsafely. If you feel that a junction or stretch of road should be considered for yellow lines please contact us using the details below or use the online street fault report form. We will carry out a feasibility study which includes consultation with the emergency services, and if the study shows that yellow lines will be helpful we will arrange for them to be introduced.
