Road safety

Each year there are around 3,500 people are killed on Britain's roads and 40,000 are seriously injured.

Reducing road injuries and deaths

The government has published national road safety casualty reduction targets which must be achieved by 2010. New targets are being consulted on by the Department for Transport. Further casualty reductions to make the UK’s roads safer will be published in the next few months. Targets will take us forward to 2020.

Lewisham Council is committed to meeting these targets by introducing new and innovative measures to reduce casualties on Lewisham's roads. These measures include education, training and publicity, neighbourhood road safety initiatives, which are all delivered by the road safety team.

A programme of local safety schemes aims to reduce road casualties through the introduction of engineering measures.

School travel plan development encourages responsible car use and aims to increase the number of people who walk and cycle in Lewisham.

School crossing patrols (lollipop people) throughout Lewisham are high profile, visible members of the road safety team.
