The East London Railway is being created by extending the existing East London underground line. The line will also be integrated with the North London Railway, which will be upgraded.
East London Railway services will call at several stations in the borough of Lewisham. This will create a new link between the borough and stations in North London.
The extension will happen in two phases. The developments in our borough will be included in the first phase.
Phase one
Phase One, to be delivered in 2010 will run from Highbury and Islington down to West Croydon and Crystal Palace, via the borough of Lewisham.
East London Railway services will call at several stations in the borough: New Cross, New Cross Gate, Brockley, Honor Oak Park, Forest Hill and Sydenham.
There will be a link between a new station at Dalston Junction and the existing Highbury and Islington station which will join the East London Railway with the North London Railway to create the London Overground network. The link will be completed by February 2011.
The North London Railway runs from Stratford in East London, across North London and down to Richmond in West London.
Phase two
Phase Two will join the East London Railway to Clapham Junction and will complete an orbital rail route around London on which London Overground services will run. This work is scheduled to take place some time after the London 2012 Olympics.
Closure of the East London line
The East London line will close on Saturday 22 December 2007 to allow the replacement of the track and signalling. It is due to re-open in June 2010, as part of the new East London Railway.
