Personal safety on trains and at stations

The Docklands Light Railway station at LewishamBritish Transport Police is the national police force for the railways providing a policing service to rail operators, their staff and passengers throughout England, Wales and Scotland.

The force is also responsible for policing the London Underground system, the Docklands Light Railway, the Midland Metro Tram System and Croydon Tramlink.

Reporting incidents on trains or at stations

The national freephone number for British Transport Police is 0800 40 50 40. This number is for non-emergency incidents.

For all emergency incidents, contact the emergency services on 999.

You can also notify the Council of incidents of graffiti, vandalism and hate crime. Use the crime notification forms on the right of this page to do this.

British Transport Police in Lewisham

The borough is served by the London South area of the British Transport Police. They have 11 stations in the region, and have three Police Reassurance Teams, one of which serves the Lewisham area.

The Lewisham team, funded by the Mayor of London, is now operating from Lewisham station.

A new police station in Lewisham funded jointly by Transport for London and South Eastern Trains will concentrate on the routes that run to Dartford through Lewisham and via Woolwich Arsenal or Eltham.

The team will focus on hotspots of anti-social behaviour at Woolwich Arsenal, Lewisham and Abbey Wood.

Safety measures at train stations and on trains

Southern Railways

All stations that are maintained by Southern Railways now have live closed circuit television (CCTV) coverage.

Help Points are also located at their metro stations offering both an information facility and an emergency assistance button which when pressed will immediately link you to the CCTV centre.

Many of their trains also have CCTV on board.

Southeastern

In 2005 and 2006, the rail operator Southeastern installed CCTV systems and passenger help points at all of their stations on the three lines between London and Dartford, which include their stations in our borough. 

These systems are linked to the South Eastern control centre at Blackfriars, and are monitored 24 hours-a-day.  Many of their trains also have CCTV on board.

Docklands Light Railway

All Docklands Light Railway (DLR) stations are monitored by CCTV. Every platform is equipped with a passenger alarm, which provides direct contact with the control room.

There is always a member of staff on every train.
