Internet safety

Making a payment online

  • Never enter a card number unless you can see a padlock in the web browser window’s frame (rather than in the web page itself) and the website address begins https://. You may not see this until you actually get to the page where you enter your credit card number.
  • Be wary of giving your card information to any site that you do not trust completely.

Protecting children

  • If you suspect a paedophile may be grooming your child or your child is being stalked or harassed, contact the Virtual Global Task Force, the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre or your local police.
  • Set ground rules for children and ask your child to read the Net Smart rules from the NCH.
  • The Kidsmart and ThinkUKnow websites also give further information for children, carers, parents and teachers.
  • Use internet content filtering and spam filters to reduce the risk of accidental exposure to unwanted content.
  • Set up shared computers properly to restrict what children can do.
  • Consider setting up a family e-mail account which can be used specifically to register for websites, competitions etc.

Using your computer safely

  • Beware of fake websites. Look out for sites appearing different to usual, not having a secure site padlock, or asking for your personal details in full.
  • Use strong passwords. Avoid using one for all services or plain words. Use a combination of numbers and letters and change it regularly.
  • Install anti-virus software, a firewall and spyware removal software on your computer.

Fraudulent or 'spam' emails

  • Do not forward or respond to unsolicited emails, as you may open your computer network to viruses, and reveal personal information.
  • Do not believe everything you read and beware of emails that you weren't expecting.
  • If you receive emails requesting personal details, such as your PIN numbers or passwords, check they are genuine. A legitimate financial institution would never request these details from their customers in this way.
  • You can register with the Email Preference Service to opt out of receiving promotional emails.
