Safer Lewisham Partnership

Your safety is very important to us and reducing crime and making Lewisham a safer place is one of seven key priorities for action.

We have given this commitment a high profile by creating a deputy to the Mayor with responsibility for community safety. The deputy sits on the Council’s executive, the cabinet.

The Council, together with the Police, has established the Safer Lewisham Partnership to work together to make the borough safer.

Our mission is to:

  • reduce crime
  • enhance support for victims of crime
  • reduce the fear of crime
  • reduce drug related harm.

The partnership goes back a number of years but the Crime and Disorder Act 1998 also placed specific responsibilities on the police and on the Council to work together with other agencies.

The partnership includes the Fire Brigade, Metropolitan Police Authority, Probation Service and the Lewisham Primary Care Trust and works with a wide range of other organisations such as:

  • Race Equality Action Lewisham
  • Crown Prosecution Service
  • housing associations
  • Youth Offending Team
  • Victim Support.

In April 2005, the Safer Lewisham Partnership published the Safer Lewisham Strategy 2005 to 2008.

The plan reports on an audit of levels of crime, drugs and anti-social behaviour in the borough, in consultation with local people about the issues they think important. It sets out a plan of action, with targets, for reducing crime and disorder over the next three years.

The Crime and Disorder Act 1998 (section 17) also places a duty on the Council to take account of the likely effect of our actions and to do all we reasonably can to reduce crime and disorder in all our activities.
