Key to a brighter future for Lewisham’s bright young things

Lewisham Council will be toasting the success of scores of young hopefuls as they secure the chance to build a remarkable new career through the borough’s innovative traineeship scheme.

The scheme was set up to help reduce the amount of vulnerable young people currently not in education, training or employment.

Steve Bullock, Mayor of Lewisham, said 'We are dedicated to helping foster and develop our young people and we recognised that one way of supporting them would be through employment here at the council.

'I would like to congratulate everybody who has been short-listed. All our young people should be proud of getting this far. It is a brilliant achievement.

'We are the first borough to offer this type of scheme and we hope it is a success. Again, Lewisham is proving to be at the forefront of transforming lives and I look forward to working with winners.'

Four young people aged between 16 and 17 will receive a twelve month traineeship, with two traineeships in the sports and leisure industry with Millwall Community Scheme and Teachsport, one in the youth service in partnership with LEAP and one working with Connexions.

The four successful applicants were announced at a Traineeship Awards evening on Friday November 3rd at the Lewisham Civic Suite.
