Mayor challenges Post Office over Forest Hill changes

The Mayor of Lewisham, Sir Steve Bullock, has written to the Post Office seeking assurances over local post office services. The Post Office is planning to transfer services from its Forest Hill post office to WH Smiths.

Steve Bullock has asked for firm assurances on accessibility of the WH Smiths premises and retention of a full range of post office services in Forest Hill. The Mayor also told the Post Office of local concern at the loss of a shop front business in Forest Hill. He urged the Post Office to maintain the current network of Post Office services across the borough.

Commenting, Steve said: “The Council is united across politics on the need to retain the local services which the Post Office offers our communities. We known there are commercial pressures on the Post Office but many of the services offered are essential especially to older residents. We will do everything we can to make the case for our local services.”

Lewisham Council has previously passed a motion opposing the loss of Post Offices in the borough and has responded formally to the Post Office’s wider consultation on changes to services emphasising the important social and economic benefits to local communities of post offices.

Post Office representatives met the Mayor and a cross party group of councillors on 7 September. The Mayor formally responded in writing on 11 September.
