Whitefoot Lane Warriors

Mike Friday, England sevens coach, will be officially launching Lewisham's new community youth rugby team.

The Whitefoot Lane Warriors will be unveiled at a sevens TAG rugby tournament involving local primary schools and local clubs on 1 October, at Whitefoot Playing Fields.

Mike Friday, who will be officially kicking off the tournament at 10.30, said: 'I'm absolutely delighted to be able to come along and help launch the Whitefoot Lane Warriors on Sunday. I'm a local boy from Lewisham and it's great that so many people have worked together to give children in the area the chance to play rugby.'

The Warriors are supported by the Rugby Football Union to further build on the rapid growth in popularity of the game in the capital.

The Lewisham-based club were kick-started by a week long summer rugby skills camp run by the RFU and the Warriors have been meeting for weekly training sessions since 10 September.

Lewisham’s Community Rugby Coach, funded by Lewisham Council and the RFU, has brought rugby to a dozen local schools over the last year.

Steve Bullock, Mayor of Lewisham, who will be presenting medals at 12pm, said: 'By supporting a Community Rugby Coach we are giving more opportunities to our young people to get involved in sports and physical activity. Some of our rugby sides performed impressively at the London Youth Games and I'm sure the Warriors will harness and build on our abundance of talented young people.'

Local schools, including Rushey Green, Torridon, Forster Park and Sandhurst, will take part in the sevens TAG rugby tournament and officially launch the event.

Whitefoot Lane Warriors will be a rugby club specifically for young people, and will initially run teams for boys and girls aged 8-14.

The young people already signed-up for the club were treated to a tour of Twickenham Stadium and a visit to the Museum of Rugby.

Since England's victory in the 2003 Rugby World Cup, the number of people actively taking part in the game has increased by 25 per cent, and thousands of young people have been introduced to the game.
