Cleaning and repairs squads from Lewisham Council will be visiting streets across the borough to give them a complete one-day makeover.
The pilot My Street Makeovers, which will involve whole streets being cleared of cars, are being carried out by council Transport and Environmental departments and their contractors, Glendale.
Cllr Heidi Alexander, Deputy Mayor and Cabinet Member for Environment, said: "The My Street Makeovers are currently in an experimental phase. If they are a success and residents feel the cleaning and repairs blitz has made their street a better place to live, then we will look at rolling-out the scheme."
As part of the comprehensive one-day makeovers, new street signs will be installed, gulleys thoroughly cleansed, pot holes filled, graffiti removed, lamp columns repainted, tree-growth and weeds cleared and abandoned vehicles towed away.
The residents of Elmer Road, Catford, which is being made over on August 22, have been asked to move their cars to nearby roads for the day.
Cars left on the road will then be checked through DVLA systems and those found to be abandoned will be impounded.
People who have inadvertently left vehicles on the road will be informed that their car has moved to a nearby street.
Residents affected by the makeovers will continue to be consulted throughout the process so the council can judge whether the pilot scheme is a success with local people.
