DisabledGo launch

A service is being launched that will allow the borough’s disabled people to check the accessibility of over 1,000 local businesses and facilities on line.

The guide to the accessibility of Lewisham's local businesses and services, compiled in association with Lewisham Council, Marks and Spencer and DisabledGo, will be available on the DisablityGo website from 1pm on 15 August.

Steve Bullock, Mayor of Lewisham, said: 'This website will have a really positive impact on the borough, not only making life easier for disabled residents but also encouraging businesses to become more accessible.'

The accessibility details were compiled from an extensive survey of local businesses and facilities, including pubs, restaurants, arts venues and hotels.

The launch event will be held at the Laban Centre in Creekside, Deptford, and will include a short guided tour of the Sterling Prize winning building.

In addition to the legal obligation that businesses become more accessible, it also makes good sense from a economic perspective, with 40,000 disabled people living in Lewisham alone.

The DisabledGo website receives over 33,000 hits everyday and has received a number of honours, including Radio 2's Website of the Day and the New Statesman's Website of the Month awards.

For accessibility details for Lewisham and beyond visit www.disabledGo.info from August 15.
