Lewisham residents recycle Christmas trees in record numbers

Residents in Lewisham have set a new record for recycling their old Christmas trees. Following the end of the festive holiday season this year, residents around the borough sent a staggering 10,270 Christmas trees to be recycled.

Councillor Susan Wise, Cabinet Member for Customer Services, said: “I thought we did well last year, but this figure is amazing! Lewisham Council would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who recycled their tree. It shows a real commitment not only to recycling, but also a real concern for the environment.”

The trees, collected by Glendale Grounds Management, were shredded in a massive tree shredder and will now be mulched and used for different environmental projects around the borough, including:

  • being laid as a weed suppressant in green spaces and housing estates
  • creating woodland pathways in parks and green spaces
