Mayor and Cabinet digest: 28 January 2009

Here are some of the key decisions taken by Sir Steve Bullock, Mayor of Lewisham, at the meeting of the Mayor and Cabinet on 28 January 2009.

Social Services performance

The Commission for Social Care Inspection (CSCI) has again rated Lewisham’s Adult Social Care Services as two stars out of a range from zero to three stars. It has judged the Service as continuing to deliver 'good' outcomes for the people of Lewisham with 'promising' capacity for improvements.

To maintain its two-star rating, the Council needed to demonstrate an ongoing improvement above and beyond the last period of assessment.

It was agreed that where improvements have not already been addressed and achieved, Council officers should act to achieve them in line with the service improvement plans for 2009-10 and as part of its modernisation programme.

Dog Control Orders

A borough-wide Dog Control Order was adopted, effective from 6 April, allowing for an on-the-spot Fixed Penalty Notice of £75 if people with dogs:

  • fail to remove their dog’s faeces from a public place
  • do not keep their dog on a lead in a designated area such as a park or open space - these will be sign-posted in public areas
  • do not put, or keep their dog on a lead when directed to do so by an authorised officer
  • permit their dog to enter land to which dogs are excluded - these will be sign-posted
  • take more than four dogs onto land at any one time.

The Order will be enforced by a number of agencies including Safer Neighbourhood Teams, Wardens and animal welfare officers.

Review of empty properties

The recommendations made in this report by the Sustainable Development Select Committee were agreed and the Council will look at further ways in which it is able to bring empty properties back into use.

School Governor appointments

The list of nominees for appointment was agreed.
