Be wary of misleading health and well-being claims

Lewisham residents are advised to be wary if they respond to advertising, or buy or use products sold on the basis of having miracle health or slimming cures.

It is against the law to make false claims about a product's ability to cure illnesses, dysfunction and malformations.

Lewisham Council urges residents:

Don't be misled by ‘miracle’ cure claims.

Don't be misled by unscrupulous individuals or rogue traders who claim to have cures for conditions such as baldness, arthritis, rheumatism, heart disease, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease and cancer.

There is, at present, no cure for cancer. Under the Cancer Act 1939, it is a criminal offence to claim that cancer can be treated or cured.

Don't be misled by claims that you can lose weight without exercising or changing your diet.

Councillor Susan Wise, Cabinet Member for Customer Services, said: ”Lewisham takes a very poor view of people or businesses who make false claims, or trade in illegal or harmful products and will take action to ensure that traders comply with safety regulations relating to cosmetics and health products.”

Lewisham Council would like to hear from any residents who have received dubious post or emails, or who have seen advertising relating to ‘miracle’ health cures. All calls and emails will be treated in the strictest confidence.

To report a trader or suspect advertising, please call Lewisham Council on 020 8314 7759
