Lewisham children get set to step out for summer

Children across Lewisham are set to have an energetic start to their summer term, thanks to walking initiatives in the borough’s primary schools.

Thirteen schools in Lewisham were awarded Government grants totalling £12,000 under the Walking to School Initiative.

The scheme was launched by the Secretary of State for Transport, Douglas Alexander, in November last year and provides money for walking buses and other walking initiatives in primary schools.

Douglas Alexander said: "Nationally, more than 3000 primary schools will receive Walking to School grants. That's more than one in six across the country, which is great news. The more children walk to school, the more they keep fit and healthy, the greater the benefits in cutting congestion and pollution around their schools. It's also good for helping to tackle climate change."

Councillor Robert Massey, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People said: "Many children live close to their school and walking is easily the best way for them to get there. If fewer pupils are driven to school each day, we'll see a big improvement in quality of life for everyone. And if fewer cars are on the road, then we should see fewer accidents too - many of which involve young people."
