Lewisham is London’s fastest improving borough at GCSE

Lewisham is the fastest improving borough in London at GCSE over three years with a rise of 16.1 per cent.

The increase equates to an additional 300 pupils leaving the borough’s schools each year with five or more GCSEs at A* to C grade.

And the borough is ranked as 2nd most improved in London this year up 5.4% on the year before.

Addey and Stanhope and St Joseph’s both appeared in the national list of top 100 improvers over four years and Deptford Green, whose outgoing headteacher was knighted in the new year honours, appeared in the national top 5% for its value added score of 1029.2

Councillor Robert Massey, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People said: “Lewisham is one of the fastest improving boroughs in the country and now has a record at all ages which we can celebrate.

“Every year our results go from strength to strength as our schools continue to improve and that is testament to the hard work of everyone involved in education in the borough.”

Steve Bullock, Mayor of Lewisham, added: “Superb results like this are not just down to the hard work of the children in our schools; they also have the support of their parents and benefit from the tireless effort made by many dedicated professionals.

“Children and parents can see that Lewisham’s schools are getting better and better and with the £255m we are spending on our secondary schools things can only get even better.”

Lewisham’s average pass rate for 5+A*-C GCSEs is 54.8% and 40.8% for 5+A*-C including maths and English.
