Work began this week on a new 25m, six-lane swimming pool at Wavelengths Leisure Pool and Library in Deptford, Lewisham.
The new pool will take around 19 months to complete at a cost of £4.3m. The project is led by Lewisham Council and is being undertaken by Parkwood Leisure Ltd who manage the leisure centre and library on behalf of Lewisham.
Every effort will be made to ensure that existing customers of the leisure centre and library experience the minimum disruption. The 25m six-lane pool will complement the existing facilities, which include a leisure pool, fitness gym, exercise studio, café and health suite.
Mayor of Lewisham, Steve Bullock, said “I am thrilled that the work to add a new pool to the existing Wavelengths leisure facility has been started so quickly. This is good news for residents and schools in Deptford, and also marks a start on the whole redevelopment of the Giffin Street area.”
Matthew Roberts, Regional Director for Parkwood Leisure expressed delight that agreement had been reached to upgrade and increase facilities at Wavelengths, an existing centre, at a time when many authorities are rationalising or reducing facilities.
He said, “This shows the commitment that Lewisham Council and Parkwood Leisure Limited, are making to increase opportunities in the community for participation and a healthier lifestyle.”
