An independent survey has revealed that Lewisham residents are “highly satisfied” with the level of cleanliness of the Borough’s streets and refuse collection services.
The survey, conducted by the Audit Commission, has found that in the past three years, waste collection and street cleaning services in Lewisham are now among the best in London.
Every three years, the Audit Commission publishes its Best Value (BV) data which measure the performance levels of Councils across the country.
The results of the survey show residents’ satisfaction with Lewisham Council’s street cleaning services (BV89) has leapt to the very top percentile. The level of satisfaction with waste collection (BV90) is also among the best in the capital.
The announcement was made on Valentine’s Day, the second anniversary of Lewisham Council’s ‘Love Lewisham’ campaign, which aims to improve recycling and environmental awareness in the Borough.
Members of staff responsible for improving Lewisham’s environment received praise from Councillors who hosted an awards ceremony at Beckenham Place Park. At the event, several members of staff received special recognition for their hard work and outstanding contribution.
Councillor Heidi Alexander, Deputy Mayor of Lewisham, said: “Lewisham Council is absolutely delighted that residents feel we are providing such a good service.
"However, all the credit needs to go to the hard working members of staff who are out on the streets every day making sure Lewisham is a cleaner and greener place in which to live.
"Today, we’ve come together to celebrate this achievement and to recognise not only those staff who have made an outstanding contribution but the hard work of everyone who has made this possible.”
Councillor Susan Wise, Cabinet Member for Customer Services, said: “These results are excellent but the Council is not complacent. Our ‘Love Lewisham’ campaign has shown great results but we aim to do even more.
"With the help of residents and the continued hard work and dedication of all staff, we are convinced Lewisham can have the cleanest streets in London.”
