People in Lewisham could be missing out on their right to vote in the upcoming European Elections in June without even knowing it.
That’s the message of National Register to Vote Week, 4 -10 May 2009, when Lewisham is joining with the Electoral Commission to make sure that nothing comes between eligible residents and their right to vote.
Elections to the European Parliament take place on 4 June. If you want to have your say on who represents you, you need to register to vote by Tuesday 19 May. If you’re not registered, then you can’t vote.
“We want to make sure that nobody misses out on their right to take part in these elections because they are not registered to vote,” said Lewisham Council’s Chief Executive Barry Quirk.
”Some people think that you are automatically registered to vote if you pay council tax, but that is not the case. You need to be on the electoral register to use your right to vote.”
If you’re not sure whether you are on the electoral register or would like a registration form:
Tuesday 19 May is also the deadline to apply for a postal vote and cancel or request changes to your existing postal vote.
Karen Quaintmere, Head of English Regions at the Electoral Commission, adds: “Registering to vote is important because it means you can have a say on the issues that affect you, from the environment to international trade and transport. Even if you’re not sure whether you will vote, registering gives you the choice to do so if you do become inspired by an issue or party.”
