Volunteers from the local community, and staff from Lewisham Council and Glendale Grounds Management have joined forces to transform unused planters in New Cross.
Planters by bus stops in New Cross have been filled with plants that will be able to withstand traffic fumes and drought.
Councillor Susan Wise, who strongly supports the volunteers, said: “This is another wonderful example of organised community gardening in Lewisham. As a borough, we love flowers and are very proud of the work carried out by our residents in this way.
“Because Lewisham takes part in London in Bloom every year, I hope these latest creations help to make an impact on the judges as they assess the rest of Lewisham's displays."
Students at Goldsmiths University of London, local artists, residents and environmental enthusiasts joined forces to transform the planters, with plants and compost provided by Glendale.
Katrin Schlenzka, a local garden designer who galvanised people into action, said: “Everyone had really good fun planting - people who care about their local environment and wanted to do something to make it look nicer! We’re hoping that local people will continue to help out by watering the plants until they become more established.”
The planters are now overflowing with plants (such as aromatic herbs lavender and rosemary) and colourful bulbs (such as iris and crocus), thanks to the tender loving care of these green-fingered plant lovers.
